DIY Tips to Make Your House a Home

by Shea Homes Northern California on September 27, 2012

We all want to make our house as “homey” as possible, but sometimes coming up with an original creative idea can be difficult. Have you ever found the perfect decor for your home but looked at the price tag and realized you’d have to put that dream item aside?

Whether you’re crafty or not there are an infinite amount of ways to make your house feel like home, without the big budget. Here are some DIY ideas to help you get started.

  • Sometimes the secret to sprucing up the look of a room is in a simple paint job. Buying a can or two of paint won’t completely deplete your wallet and painting can be a fun family activity. Painting straight lines can be daunting but here’s a great guide to perfectly straight lines here.

  • Maybe painting isn’t your thing. You can add color and life to your walls by framing fabric or a wallpaper sample. Or, grab a slab of wood and wrap it in the fabric or wallpaper sample for a fun unique look.

  • Here’s a cheap trick. If you have old shoe boxes lying around paint them bright colors and turn them into a hanging wall display!

  • For the door collecting enthusiast, or maybe someone who likes to rummage through other’s junk, here’s a great idea! Turn old doors into a coffee table in a few easy steps.

  • Here’s another simple, and practical, idea. Paint the door you use most in your home a dark color, like black, to reduce smudges. A great example for this project would be the garage door entering into your home. The color also adds a little extra flare to your garage and really minimizes the need for cleaning. Now you don’t have to worry so much about your husband or kids coming into the home with dirty hands.

  • Here’s one for the lover of electronics. Between you and the people in your home you may have quite a few electronics, create your very own DIY charging station!

  • And one last idea: use scraps of plywood to create shelves to help you organize or as a place to arrange some of your photos.

Shea Homes Mini Hero: Jack Welch

by Shea Homes Arizona on September 27, 2012

This month, our Shea Homes Mini Hero nomination goes to Jack Welch. Two years ago the Welch family moved into their lovely Shea Home; they were ecstatic to start a new chapter in their lives.

One year later, their lives took a drastic change when the family noticed something was “off” with Jack. His attitude had completely changed; he was fussy and much more irritable than normal.  He routinely lost his appetite, turned pale, and became lethargic. His parents took him to the doctor hoping maybe he had an ear infection, strep, or even mono.

To their saddened surprise, Jack was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at the young age of four. Jack was sent right to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where he stayed for a week, starting chemotherapy right away. The Welch family’s journey with cancer had just begun.

From day one, Jack’s parents sought out any opportunity they had to fight back against their son’s cancer. They heard about the Light the Night fundraiser, which was supported by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and shortly after, the Jack Strikes Back team had begun. The Welch family has always been hard working and willing to help others, so it has been a big transition to be on the receiving end. They raised $9,000 in the first six weeks just from friends and family and have now raised about $15,000 so far.

If you would like help the Welch family and other families facing similar struggles, you can join team Jack Strikes Back by visiting www.lightthenight.org. Monetary donations to the team are welcome as well. The next Light the Night event is November 10th at Tempe Town Lake. It is a wonderful event perfect for families of all ages. Prepare to be inspired!

We are very proud of Jack and his family as they keep fighting back at Leukemia. We wish them the best and are excited to see Jacks many accomplishments he will conquer in the future. For continued updates on Jack’s fight against Leukemia, “Like” Jack Strikes Back on Facebook.
