Quality Products Build Our Foundation

by Jennifer Ivy on May 29, 2013

When you get right down to it, building a quality home means getting the best products from the ground up, says Bryan Binney, Shea Homes San Diego Vice President of Operations.

He spent some time talking about the process that makes building with quality products – installed by the industry’s best subcontractors — so critical to what buyers get when they move in.

If you think about Apple products, he said, they “always receive high customer satisfaction results for quality. Their approach is to ‘simplify’ all that they do, even down to the packaging. They think of all of the smallest details and execute them flawlessly, even down to the box it comes in.”

Applying those principles works in homebuilding too.

“We build quality homes by using quality products from suppliers that have a solid record of performance,” Binney said. “With extensive experience in homebuilding and even information learned from customer surveys, we focus on products and brands that will perform long term.”

Part of the science of homebuilding is finding the best, most innovative products on the market and working them into our designs, he added. When possible, it makes sense to work with local manufacturers, like Eagle Roofing (roof tile), Omega Products (stucco), Frazee (paint) and Hanson Aggregates (concrete). Other times, national brands are the way to go.

Binney and his team watch the marketplace and find products like Whirlpool’s new oven with the “Steam Clean” option that enables the chef to clean up after everyday light spills using only heat and a little water.

Binney also likes Delta faucets (featured in all Shea communities throughout San Diego), especially the the Delta Touch2O®, found at Aria in Chula Vista, Origen in Mission Valley, and Voscana in Carlsbad.

“It doesn’t matter if you have full hands or 10 messy fingers — keep the faucet clean, even when your hands aren’t,” he said. “Tap anywhere on the spout or handle with your wrist or forearm to start and stop the flow of water.”

The technology can also help you conserve water, he added. “It’s easy to turn the water flow off when it’s not needed between tasks.”

Shea’s team is always on the lookout for new products that advance the quality for its homebuyers, from attending trade shows to talking to suppliers about what they’re seeing in the marketplace.

“You wouldn’t believe what companies are developing,” said Binney. “A lot of them are starting to think like Apple – and so are we, always keeping the homebuyer’s experience in mind.”

What’s your story?

by Shea Homes Arizona on May 23, 2013

Everyone has a story, a history of who they are, where they’ve been, and who and what they have invested their time, love and passion in.

At Shea Homes, we’ve chosen to invest in you. In young professionals. In grandparents. In kids. In teachers. In stay-at-home moms. In journalists. In construction workers. In blue collar. In white collar. In no collar. In small business owners. In families. In you.

Over 130 years ago, the founding of JF Shea Company began a story that has been shaped by the people and history of America. Whether contributing to public works projects such as the Hoover Dam, interstate highways, and the Golden Gate Bridge, or it’s building ships during World War II or building homes today, Shea has always been at work impacting communities in the US.

Our story isn’t complete without you because our story is about your stories.

Just like Jim and Denise from this week’s video, we build each home to fit its owners’ lifestyle. We hope to help you build the framework of your story, but it’s you, your family and friends and the things you’re passionate about that fill in all the lines.

memorialAnd on this Memorial Day weekend, we will take time to honor the stories of the service men and women who have lost their lives fighting for this great nation. Their ultimate sacrifice has protected the freedom that we all enjoy and the pursuit of the American dream.
