Green Living

On Saturday, Feb. 18 from noon to 3 p.m., Shea Homes San Diego will host two food trucks, craft beer tasting and live entertainment during the opening celebration of new loft-style townhomes at Origen at Civita in Mission Valley.

While touring nine new model homes, the first 500 guests who fill out a registration card are invited to enjoy complimentary lunch from two of San Diego’s most popular food trucks – Miho Gastrotruck and Food Farm — as well as craft beer tasting from Karl Strauss Brewing Company and Green Flash Brewing Company. The free public event will also feature live music on the fourth floor of a skyLoft model home.

“During our soft opening over the holidays, we sold 10 new homes to mix of young professionals, move-downs and second home buyers,” said Vanessa Linn, vice president of sales and marketing for Shea Homes San Diego. “This event on Feb. 18 is intended to formally introduce these smart urban townhomes to the San Diego marketplace.”

Located at 7894 Civita Blvd. just east of SR-163 in Mission Valley, Origen at Civita offers two new neighborhoods of three- and four-story townhomes — Origen socialGarden and Origen skyLoft.

Designed by Woodley Architectural Group, both communities showcase contemporary urban architecture with multi-story window walls, expansive outdoor decks, open rail systems, open tread stairs, wrought iron railings, interior sliding glass doors, stone and brick surfaces, and angled doors, walls and floors.  Interiors feature kitchen islands, master and powder baths with vessel sinks, tankless water heaters and stainless steel appliances. Each of the 10 floor plans includes a two-car garage.

Convenient in-home technology innovations include a 2gig wireless system to control security, lighting and heating from any Smartphone or tablet.

Located near the corner of Friars Road and Mission Center Road in the heart of Mission Valley, Origen is the first new community to open at Civita, a 230-acre master planned community being developed as sustainable, transit-oriented village by Sudberry Properties.

The sales office and nine new model homes are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Mondays, when hours are 1 p.m. to 5 pm. For more information, call 866-OWN-SHEA (866-696-7432) or visit www.SheaHomes.com/SanDiego.

Many homeowners and potential homeowners wonder how they can help make their home a safe-haven for their families.  Looking into the health standards of the house you would like to buy or build can be one way to do just that.

Over the years, health experts have uncovered many different pollutants in construction materials that can be harmful to one’s health.  These pollutants are called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).  Scientifically, any compound containing carbon qualifies as “organic,” and “volatile” just means that it transforms from a solid to a gaseous state under non-extreme conditions.  However, out of the thousands of chemicals that can scientifically be classified as VOCs many are known to be dangerous to human health.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), VOCs are have various long- and short-term adverse affects on human health, and are commonly found in products such as paints, carpeting, glue, copiers and printers, etc.

There are currently no EPA standards regulating the amount of VOCs present in construction materials. However, Shea Homes is committed to providing a healthy environment for its homeowners and their families.  To start, the interior of each Shea home is painted with low-level VOC paints to maintain high air-quality.  In addition, the carpeting in a Shea home has the Carpet and Rug Institute Green Label, which indicates a very low emission of dangerous VOCs.

While it is difficult to determine the VOC levels in older homes, homeowners can count on the healthy environment of a Shea home.  What are some other ways that you can keep your home VOC free?  We would love to hear how you protect your family from the dangerous agents in household products such as adhesives, cleaners and disinfectants, automotive products, aerosol propellants, etc.

Together, We Conserve

by Shea Homes Arizona on October 11, 2011

Throughout the 125 plus years since the founding of the JF Shea Companies, Shea has been involved in the construction of water projects. For example, Shea helped construct the Hoover Dam, the nation’s largest man-made reservoir and the Bonneville Dam, which supplied essential power for the Portland-area shipyards and aluminum plants, essential to America’s success in World War II.

Today, we still focus on water. As a family owned homebuilder, our goal is to leave the world better than we found it. That’s why we concentrate on energy efficiency and water conservation as we construct each home and why we encourage our homeowners to take the same care by offering tips for personal conservation

That’s just one of many reasons that we are partnering with the Salt River Project (SRP) in the Together We Conserve Campaign. Although many people think of SRP as just the electric company, water delivery has long been the cornerstone of their business. For more than 100 years, SRP has delivered water to the Valley through a system of rivers, lakes, dams and canals.

SRP, like Shea, has water in their genes.

As SRP continues with forward-looking water management strategy, Shea Homes Arizona is uniting with them [read more…]

15 Ways to Save on Your Energy Bill This Month

by Shea Homes Arizona on September 28, 2011

1. Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortably warm in the winter and comfortably cool in the summer.

2. Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120°F.

3. One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic. Check out the unique way we’re doing this at Shea Homes here in Phoenix.

4. During the heating season, keep the draperies and shades on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to enter your home and closed at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.

5. If you have a heat pump, don’t set back its thermostat manually if it causes the electric resistance heating to come on. This type of heating, which is often used as a backup to the heat pump, is more expensive.

6. Clean or change air filters once every four to six weeks.

7. Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.

8. If your air conditioner is old, consider purchasing a new, energy-efficient model. You could save up to 50% on your utility bill for cooling. For more information on energy efficient appliances, click here. [read more…]
