Loving the Arizona Summer – 10 Ways to Cool Off and Keep the Heat Out

by Shea Homes Arizona on July 27, 2012

For some, school is out for a couple more weeks and many families are settling into being at home for the what’s left of the summer. Fortunately, there are tons of ways to keep the heat from putting a damper on this fun time of the year. Here are our top ten suggestions for fun and practical ways to beat the heat:

For your practical side…

1)      On especially hot days, try to avoid heat-generating activities, such as cooking indoors or running the dryer. It’s the perfect time to break out the grill and keep the heat outside. But since it’s difficult to avoid cooking inside entirely, remember to use your range fan to vent the hot air out of your house when you use the stovetop.

2)      Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary. The heat they produce can make the thermostat think the house is warmer than it really is, and your system will run harder than it needs to.

3)      Did you know that white not only reflects light well, but it also reflects heat? Installing white window shades, drapes, or blinds can help keep the heat of the house. Also, don’t forget to close blinds, shades and draperies on the east side of the house in the morning and the west side at night.

4)      One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic. Check out the unique way we’re doing this at Shea Homes here in Phoenix.

5)      Be sure your windows are installed properly and check for leaks. To learn more about how the quality of your windows can affect the temperature control in your home, take a look at this blog post.

For your fun-loving side…

6)      Catch a Movie – The movie theater is (in)famous for being extra cold, and on a hot day, that’s exactly what you may need. With some of the year’s biggest blockbusters coming out in the summer, it’s the perfect time to catch up on some fun flicks. And don’t forget to check for discounts and deals before you go!

7)      Host an Ice Cream Social – Gather a few (or more) friends together and give up your diet for the evening. Ask each guest to bring their favorite topping to share and enjoy a sweet night in together.

8)      Check out a Local Museum – Why not get out and visit that art, history or science museum you’ve always wanted to check out? Phoenix has a great selection of museums for all ages and interests. For a list of museums across the Valley, click here.

9)      Sprinkler Party – Nothing says summer like running through the sprinklers! And don’t let being a “grown-up” keep you away from this fun (and sometimes silly) way to cool off. No set up or clean up required.

10)   Take a Day Trip – Lastly, if you really want to get out of the heat, take a trip up north and do a little exploring. Northern Arizona has lots of interesting places to see. Not sure where to start? Check out this site for some ideas.
