Housing market showing progress in August

by Meridith Doucette on August 7, 2012

According to the recently released National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index for August, 80 metropolitan areas across 32 states and the District of Columbia reported improvements in their housing markets.

Nine areas on the list had their positions lowered because of slight movements in housing prices while 75 markets, which was included on the list, retained their places on the list.

“The list of improving housing markets in August includes metros across every region of the country, all of which have distinctly different characteristics in terms of their economic and employment bases as well as other factors,” said Barry Rutenberg, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder from Gainesville, Florida. “One thing that most markets have in common, however, is the tight lending environment for both builders and buyers that continues to drag on their positive momentum.”

NAHB chief economist David Crowe stated that the housing industry continues to see a strong group of metropolitan areas showing up on the list every month, which is adding to evidence that the housing market is coming out of the recession.
