A new master-planned community in Brazoria County south of Houston will begin construction soon. Rise Communities LLC will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for Meridiana on April 10, a company spokesman said.

The 2,700-acre community will be near the interchange of State Highway 288 and Highway 6 in Manvel and Iowa Colony. Meridiana will include 5,500 single-family homes, and model homes are expected to open in the fall. Last year, a Dallas-based developer also broke ground on a 1,000-acre master-planned community in Manvel that was expected to include 2,100 homes.

Meridiana also will include a new on-site elementary school, which is expected to open for the 2016-2017 school year and will be part of the Alvin Independent School District. The community will emphasize “educational-oriented amenities,” Rise President Dan Naef said in a statement.

“With Meridiana, we are making a bold commitment to education with learning and discovery experiences for all stages in life, from young children to active adults,” Naef said in the statement.

Rise plans to announce homebuilders in June. However, California-based Shea Homes has identified Meridiana as one of the communities in which it will build.

Shea Homes, which has just entered the Houston market, also will build homes in Cane Island, another one of Rise’s master-planned communities.

Rise broke ground in November on Cane Island, a 1,000-acre community near Interstate 10 and the Grand Parkway in the Katy area, and the community is expected to open this year.

Rise also told the Houston Business Journal in November that it would move its headquarters from the Las Vegas area to Houston this year.
