Out with the Old and in with the New… Year

Whether you stayed up to watch the ball drop in Times Square, or rose early to ooh and aah over the floats in the Rose Parade, New Years is a time where we can refresh and rejuvenate ourselves for a brand new year. With the new year, there is the opportunity to start fresh and begin something new. Do you usually make a New Year’s resolution?

New Year’s resolutions can be traced back to Roman mythology. As each new year began, Romans made promises to Janus, the god of beginnings and keeper of doors and entrances. Janus was depicted in Roman mythology to have two faces, one in the front of his head and one in the back; with these two faces, he could view both the past and present. Because of this, Janus became the ancient symbol of resolutions.

Today, we also take time to reflect on the past year, as well as anticipate a new year full of new prospects and opportunities. A new year gives us the chance to create a clean slate and create positive change in our lives. Popular New Year’s resolutions include improving health, finances, career and self. If you have ever set a New Year’s resolution, you know that it is easy to give up on your goal within a few weeks. In fact, according to a study done at the University of Scranton, only 8% of people are actually successful in achieving their resolution. Here are five tips to help you succeed with your New Year’s Resolution in 2013.
