Eat, Drink, and Be Merry While Raising Funds to End Cancer

by Shea Homes Arizona on October 19, 2018

Shea Homes Road to 50K - Light the Night for LLS Giveback DaysSome people use their illustrious degrees and decades of painstaking research to find a cure for cancer. Others fundraise for cancer care and research through walks and marathons. On three days over the next month, you can join the effort to end cancer just by going out to lunch or dinner with Shea’s “Giveback Days”.

Join Shea Homes® Arizona on our mission to raise $50,000 for Light the Night, all to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). This series of fundraisers culminates in powerful, nationwide walks as one million survivors with their family and friends will join together to illuminate what is often the darkest time in a person’s life.

Three different Valley restaurants will host “Giveback Days” over the next month, each donating a portion of the day’s proceeds to the Light the Night fundraiser – so bring friends, family, and colleagues to lunch, dinner, or happy hour, and score some delicious food and drink while raising money for cancer care and research. The Shea team and our partners will be at both Bourbon Jacks and Dos Gringos, injecting extra doses of fun into the atmosphere with free giveaways, 50/50 raffles, and silent auctions – if you’re a sports fan, you absolutely won’t want to miss some of these items up for bid! Or buy a football square for your favorite team, and if you pick the lucky numbers, not only will you be raising money for Light the Night, but you’ll win some dough yourself.

Food, fun, and fundraising for a great cause; what’s not to love?

October 26 – Bourbon Jacks (11 West Boston Street, Chandler, Arizona 85225) Local and family owned Bourbon Jacks Bar and Grill blends traditional country with contemporary appeal, boasting a fresh innovative menu, extensive drink selection with over 200 Bourbons and Whiskies on the menu, and an exciting atmosphere with live country music!

November 2 – Dos Gringos If you’re into tacos, drinks, parties, patios, and having a blast with your friends playing oversized games, this is the spot for you. The menu is filled with a mix of traditional and innovative fare, like the can’t-miss SuperCheesyGooeyChimichanga, which is the tastiest carnitas and jalapeno cream cheese burrito you’ll ever have. Come by, play some games, grab a bite, and fight back against cancer!

Mesa location at 1958 S. Greenfield Rd. Mesa, AZ 85206

Tempe location at 8000 S. Priest Rd. Tempe, AZ 85284

Chandler location at 1361 N. Alma School Rd. Chandler, AZ 85224

November 14 – Rita’s of Chandler (2975 E Ocotillo Rd, Chandler, AZ 85249) The only thing that could make frozen custard any better is eating it for a good cause. Rita’s frozen custard is carefully made in small batches to maximize quality and freshness, making it dangerously delicious. And that’s a good thing! The more you eat, the more you raise, so bring the kids and let loose!

Three days, three fabulous restaurants. Come to one, come to them all – everything you do moves us closer to our $50,000 goal, and could help save the life of one of the 1.3 million Americans afflicted by blood cancer.

Want to go the extra mile? Invite your friends, family, and co-workers to register, fundraise, and walk at the Light the Night event at the Phoenix Municipal Stadium at 5:00 p.m. on November 17. To learn more or to make a donation, visit: http://bit.ly/2KEpePT

Prepare Your Home for Monsoon Season

by Shea Homes Arizona on June 15, 2018

Monsoon 2018

Rain. Wind. Hail. Haboobs. Ready or not, Arizona monsoon season has officially arrived, and will be here until September 30. While the temperature dips may be nice, all that inclement weather can bring some nasty surprises with it. So if you live in the Phoenix area, now is the time to prepare. Here are Shea Homes® top tips to get your home ready for the monsoons

Prepare plants and trees

Protect your plants (and your home!) by preparing in advance. Trim any big tree branches that could snap off and damage your roof. Stake down young trees that might not make it through an intense storm. And remember, the heavy monsoon rains that often come before the strong winds can loosen the soil and make trees more prone to becoming uprooted.

Evaluate your Home’s Drainage

If you’ve noticed drainage issues in your yard that cause pooling of water during a rain storm, make sure you have it taken care of before the monsoons hit. You may need to hire a landscaping company to provide a drainage solution that will keep your yard and home protected from possible flooding.

Install or Clean Out Rain Gutters and Downspouts

Rain gutters and downspouts are the best way to direct the rain that comes from monsoon microbursts or macrobursts away from your home. Don’t wait until it’s too late to make sure yours are ready to do their job and divert the rain away from your home’s foundation.

Clean out the Garage

If you’re the type to procrastinate your spring cleaning well beyond spring, now is the perfect time to put the family to work and clean out that over-stuffed garage. Parking your car on the street or in the driveway could put it at risk during the monsoon storms since flying branches and falling trees are common occurrences when the wild weather comes to town. Make room in the garage for your car and keep it safe from flying objects, as well as hail, rain and wind.

Cool Down and Save with Summer Energy Efficiency Tips from APS

by Shea Homes Arizona on April 20, 2018

Summer in Arizona means siestas and Saturdays by the pool. For many Phoenix residents it also means sweat and rising energy bills… but it doesn’t have to! With a few easy tweaks, you can enjoy the cool comfort of modern air conditioning (invented in 1902 by the one day founder of Samsung, Willis Carrier, in case you were wondering) without the gut punch of the summer energy bill. APS® offers a few tips to keep you cool:
Energy Efficiency Tips from APS

  • Doctor Doctor: Cooling accounts for nearly half of your monthly energy bill in the hotter months, but it can easily skyrocket if your unit isn’t operating the way it should. Schedule regular yearly check-ups for you’re A/C unit to help prevent it from working harder than it has to.
  • You Spin Me Round: It’s time to wake up that ceiling fan that’s been hanging dormant since November. Turn on the fan and turn up the temperature: raising your thermostat by one degree can save 2 – 3% on energy cooling costs — set your thermostat to 79° and use fans to feel up to 5° cooler.
  • Carry on My Wayward Sun: The desert sun bakes your windows all day long. Plant low water use shade trees in front of south, east, or west facing windows to help keep sunlight from heating up your home in the summer months.
  • Take Me Home, Desert Roads: Don’t spend money to cool your home when you’re away at work all day! Program your thermostat to turn up the temperature when you are not home, or get a smart thermostat with “geofencing” that does this automatically by working with your smartphone.
  • Dancing in the Dark: Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances; they can add heat to your home. Unplugging appliances when you aren’t using them could help lower energy costs as well. TVs and toasters take up more power than you’d expect, even when you aren’t using them.

At Shea Homes®, we work to keep our new homes energy efficient from the start, which is why our ENERGY STAR® certified homes use up to 20-30% less energy than other non-certified homes. Through a combination of complete thermal enclosure systems, high efficiency ventilation, comprehensive water management systems, and energy-efficient appliances and lighting, together families that have purchased ENERGY STAR labeled homes save more than $350 million dollars each year on utility bills.
