Join Shea Homes’ Fight Against Blood Cancer at Light the Night

by Shea Homes Arizona on August 17, 2018

By the time you finish reading this post, someone in the United States will have learned they have blood cancer. That’s according to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), whose dedicated mission is to cure the 1.3 million Americans afflicted by blood cancer’s various diagnoses. With over $1.2 billion invested in research across 300 active projects, LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting blood cancer. And they need your help.

That’s why Shea Homes® in Arizona is honored to partner with Shea Mortgage®, Academy Mortgage®, Shasta Pools®, and Fidelity National Title Agency® to raise $50,000 for Light the Night, all of which benefits LLS. This series of fundraisers culminates in powerful, nationwide walks as 1 million survivors with their family and friends will join together to illuminate what is often the darkest time in a person’s life. The gathering will have survivors holding white lanterns, those remembering a loved one holding yellow, and supporters of the cause carrying red. Each color – white, yellow, and red – is a motif echoing the blood cells and bone marrow that are affected by these diseases.
Color Coded Lanterns - White, Yellow, RedRegistration for the walk is free, and all are welcome, but LLS encourages anyone to help raise funds for this critical mission. Currently, there is no prevention or early screening for blood cancers. Consequently, LLS has focused its research agenda on discovering cures, which has led to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics, and personalized medicine. Many patients have seen survival rates double, triple, and in some cases quadruple, while LLS has even cured certain blood cancers entirely. Still, more than one third of blood cancer patients do not survive more than five years after their diagnosis, meaning there is a dire need for further research. A small donation can help save a life. It could even be the man, woman, or child that received their diagnosis as you’ve been reading.

Vitalize Your Home with Your Own Terrarium

by Shea Homes Arizona on July 27, 2018

Your décor may say a lot about your sense of taste, but what does it say about your health? Introducing some plant life into your home is a quick and easy way to revitalize your space and improve your well-being. Plants have been shown to reduce airborne toxins in your home, increase productivity and concentration, and even reduce stress. But that sure won’t be the case if you’re constantly worried about keeping them alive!

Terrariums with cacti or succulents are easy ways to get the beauty and enjoyment of a houseplant, even if you are known to not have the greenest thumb. With just a little bit of time and creativity, you’ll have a wholesome piece of décor that you can be proud of. Make it a family craft and greenify your entire home!
Easy To Make TerrariumsSupplies

  • Clear glass vase or container
  • Pebbles
  • Potting soil for succulent and cactus
  • Succulents and cacti of your choice
  • Sand

Follow These Steps

  1. To start, you’ll need a clear glass container with an opening on top. Get creative! A vase, fish bowl or even a cleaned out spaghetti sauce jar will work! Shop thrift stores, antique malls, or your kitchen cabinet.
  2. Fill the bottom of the vessel with a layer of pebbles (about one and a half inches) for water drainage.
  3. On top of the pebbles, add a layer (about two and a half inches) of potting soil, specifically made for succulents and cacti.
  4. Using a spoon, make a hole in the soil big enough for the roots of your largest plant, and nestle the roots in the hole. Press the soil down firmly around the roots to make sure it is tucked in tight.
  5. Plant the rest of your succulents or cacti in the same fashion, moving from largest to smallest.
  6. Finally, distribute about one fourth of an inch of white sand around the base of your plants (optional).
  7. Now for the fun touches. Add miniature animals, figurines, shiny marbles, rocks, or favorite stones.

For maintenance, keep your terrarium in a location near a window where it will get indirect sunlight, and lightly water approximately every two weeks or when the soil dries out. Enjoy this sweet addition to your home. If you’re looking for more decorating ideas, head by any of our models and see what life could look like in a home by Shea Homes®!
