5 Design Trends to Try in 2019

by Shea Homes Arizona on December 14, 2018

Well that didn’t take long, did it? 2018 is almost one for the books, which means it’s time to take a look forward at the design trends 2019 will bring with it. Whether you’re buying a new home or revamping the home you’ve loved for years, here are five of the focal points designers will be switching up in the coming year. We’ve peeked into the newest Shea Signature™ community, Azure, to see these trends in action.

Flowers and Other Natural Elements
Succulents had their time in the spotlight in 2018, but 2019 brings with it more color and more variety. Flowers and floral patterns occupy a design Goldilocks-zone between the abstract and concrete and can add fun splashes of color and life to your home; look at how they’re used to brighten these lower level living spaces. Look to use exaggerated proportions and contrasting colors to emphasize the modern twist on this classic staple.

Artisanal Fixtures
In keeping with the naturalistic theme, decorators are looking towards locally made, artistic lighting fixtures to add interest to the most-used spaces in homes. Vintage elements, in particular, will be making a comeback, like sconces and pendants. Buying from local artisans not only supports your local economy but will give you a unique piece of culture that is sure to be a talking point at your next get-together.

Bolder Backsplashes
Light fixtures aren’t the only way to punch up the details in your kitchen; add some interest and texture with a new backsplash. Go bold with a bright color or uniquely local recycled materials (another big trend to keep an eye on next year), or opt for something a little more subtle, like the textured tile you see here. It’s a simple change that can take your kitchen from ‘bleh’ to ‘beautiful’.

Light Wooden Floors
Something just feels right about this light wooden floor. Whether you choose birch, light oak, or anything else that strikes your fancy, these floors find a perfect balance: modern, yet classic; casual, yet luxurious; open, yet cozy. With the extra light these floors reflect, they add an airy feel to any home that can drastically improve the mood of a space without sacrificing comfort.

Eco-friendly
Not a new trend by any means, but eco-friendly design will take its rightful place in the driver’s seat in 2019. If it’s both beautiful and easier on the planet, it’s in. That could be anything from choosing recycled materials wherever you can to full-out eco-centered design, like at Azure. Each residence includes small essentials like LED lighting and tankless water heaters, all the way to a highly efficient sealed attic system, designed with blown cellulose, a product with around 85% recycled content, applied to the underside of the roof deck. This can lessen the summertime heat gain on air ducts, in an effort to reduce energy costs and increase homeowner comfort. Low-E windows let in light without the unwanted heat – in fact, the window and door systems were designed to reduce radiant heat entering the home by up to 75%. All of us at Shea Homes® are proud to build homes that help sustain our natural environment.

Vitalize Your Home with Your Own Terrarium

by Shea Homes Arizona on July 27, 2018

Your décor may say a lot about your sense of taste, but what does it say about your health? Introducing some plant life into your home is a quick and easy way to revitalize your space and improve your well-being. Plants have been shown to reduce airborne toxins in your home, increase productivity and concentration, and even reduce stress. But that sure won’t be the case if you’re constantly worried about keeping them alive!

Terrariums with cacti or succulents are easy ways to get the beauty and enjoyment of a houseplant, even if you are known to not have the greenest thumb. With just a little bit of time and creativity, you’ll have a wholesome piece of décor that you can be proud of. Make it a family craft and greenify your entire home!
Easy To Make TerrariumsSupplies

  • Clear glass vase or container
  • Pebbles
  • Potting soil for succulent and cactus
  • Succulents and cacti of your choice
  • Sand

Follow These Steps

  1. To start, you’ll need a clear glass container with an opening on top. Get creative! A vase, fish bowl or even a cleaned out spaghetti sauce jar will work! Shop thrift stores, antique malls, or your kitchen cabinet.
  2. Fill the bottom of the vessel with a layer of pebbles (about one and a half inches) for water drainage.
  3. On top of the pebbles, add a layer (about two and a half inches) of potting soil, specifically made for succulents and cacti.
  4. Using a spoon, make a hole in the soil big enough for the roots of your largest plant, and nestle the roots in the hole. Press the soil down firmly around the roots to make sure it is tucked in tight.
  5. Plant the rest of your succulents or cacti in the same fashion, moving from largest to smallest.
  6. Finally, distribute about one fourth of an inch of white sand around the base of your plants (optional).
  7. Now for the fun touches. Add miniature animals, figurines, shiny marbles, rocks, or favorite stones.

For maintenance, keep your terrarium in a location near a window where it will get indirect sunlight, and lightly water approximately every two weeks or when the soil dries out. Enjoy this sweet addition to your home. If you’re looking for more decorating ideas, head by any of our models and see what life could look like in a home by Shea Homes®!

Cool Down and Save with Summer Energy Efficiency Tips from APS

by Shea Homes Arizona on April 20, 2018

Summer in Arizona means siestas and Saturdays by the pool. For many Phoenix residents it also means sweat and rising energy bills… but it doesn’t have to! With a few easy tweaks, you can enjoy the cool comfort of modern air conditioning (invented in 1902 by the one day founder of Samsung, Willis Carrier, in case you were wondering) without the gut punch of the summer energy bill. APS® offers a few tips to keep you cool:
Energy Efficiency Tips from APS

  • Doctor Doctor: Cooling accounts for nearly half of your monthly energy bill in the hotter months, but it can easily skyrocket if your unit isn’t operating the way it should. Schedule regular yearly check-ups for you’re A/C unit to help prevent it from working harder than it has to.
  • You Spin Me Round: It’s time to wake up that ceiling fan that’s been hanging dormant since November. Turn on the fan and turn up the temperature: raising your thermostat by one degree can save 2 – 3% on energy cooling costs — set your thermostat to 79° and use fans to feel up to 5° cooler.
  • Carry on My Wayward Sun: The desert sun bakes your windows all day long. Plant low water use shade trees in front of south, east, or west facing windows to help keep sunlight from heating up your home in the summer months.
  • Take Me Home, Desert Roads: Don’t spend money to cool your home when you’re away at work all day! Program your thermostat to turn up the temperature when you are not home, or get a smart thermostat with “geofencing” that does this automatically by working with your smartphone.
  • Dancing in the Dark: Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances; they can add heat to your home. Unplugging appliances when you aren’t using them could help lower energy costs as well. TVs and toasters take up more power than you’d expect, even when you aren’t using them.

At Shea Homes®, we work to keep our new homes energy efficient from the start, which is why our ENERGY STAR® certified homes use up to 20-30% less energy than other non-certified homes. Through a combination of complete thermal enclosure systems, high efficiency ventilation, comprehensive water management systems, and energy-efficient appliances and lighting, together families that have purchased ENERGY STAR labeled homes save more than $350 million dollars each year on utility bills.
