4 Fun, Inexpensive Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

by Shea Homes Arizona on May 12, 2017

The key to Mom’s heart isn’t always a pricey gift. More often than not, there are other, thoughtful ways we can honor our Moms that they will cherish forever. Here are a few tips and ideas to get you started.

Before you start, figure out what makes your mom feel special and loved. A good place to start, is to think about how she likes to celebrate, encourage and show you love.
Mother's Day Brunch1.) Create a homemade brunch for her to wake up to complete with some of her favorite things – including a personalize color scheme and her absolute favorite breakfast treats! Make it fancy with a tablecloth, flowers, plates, napkins and glasses full of her favorite beverage. Voila! Simple, cheap, beautiful and thoughtful!

Family Outing2.) Take the whole family on an outing whether it’s a hike, a day at the pool, a picnic at the park or a day trip to the her favorite nearby destination, these activities bring the family together and result in wonderful, lasting memories. Again, think about your mom’s favorite things to do & what makes her feel loved.

Stay Home3.) Stay at home for the day and create fun Mother’s Day traditions. Find some quick and easy baking recipes that you can do with your mom or wife and enjoy later! You can even make the day competitive by playing outdoor sports and indoor games! Pick up a cheap badminton or croquet set to set up in your backyard and get the energy and competition flowing outside. Or dig up those old board games, build a fort and create a new Mother’s Day tradition.

Homemade Gifts4.) Make homemade gifts for mom with the little ones. These are the gifts that mean the most to her. Get some finger-paint at your local craft store with a pack of cardstock and make a collage of handprints from everyone in the family. Another idea is to grab ingredients from her favorite dessert (i.e. cookies or scones) and layer each ingredient, one on top of the other, in a mason jar. Decorate the jar with a piece of patterned cloth over the lid and tie it with ribbon. Bake the dessert on Mother’s Day for fun bonding time and a delicious treat. Better yet, send mom out on a fun trip by herself or with a close friend – could be to the movies, for a manicure/pedicure or another one of her favorite activities – and surprise her with a clean home & a freshly made meal when she returns. Add in homemade cards from everyone in the family for an extra special touch.

Say thanks to mom this weekend and tune in to our Shea Homes blogFacebook, and Twitter for Father’s Day ideas. It’s just around the corner!

3 Modern Twists on Mom’s Dishes

by Shea Homes on May 6, 2016

Classic dishes from mom with a modern twist. The quote. “Home is where your mom is” [click-to-tweet this saying!] goes without saying. Moms have an uncanny ability to identify how to make a house a home – from creating an eye-catching gallery wall, to planning the perfect space for family gatherings, or making clever home improvements so the house can maintain its “hominess” with time. While moms have a certain knack for making a house feel like a home (dads do too!), their real magic is in the way they can provide warmth and comfort unlike anyone else in almost anything they do.

After moving out (and possibly into a house of your very own) and mom isn’t physically there to ease our anxieties or kiss our boo-boo’s, we find other things that remind us of her. Whether it is old jewelry or a hand-sewed quilt, there is one thing that mom is always remembered for – her cooking! When it comes to food, there is no Michelin star rating that beats a home-cooked meal by mom. In fact, we tend to overlook complexity — and sometimes even overall taste — when it comes to mom’s cooking because no matter what type of cook your mom is, there are certain recipes you crave, just to feel at home.

Celebrating Mother’s Day on a Budget

by Shea Homes Arizona on May 7, 2015

By now most of us know that the key to Mom’s heart isn’t always a pricey gift. More often than not there are other ways we can honor our Moms that mean so much more than 15 minutes spent in a department store.  Here are a few tips and ideas to get you started.

First, figure out what makes your mom feel special and loved. A good place to start is thinking about how she likes to celebrate, encourage and show you love.

Does she always write long notes in her cards or leave a long voicemail on your birthday? Chances are, caring words mean a lot to her and maybe a handwritten letter would send her over the moon. If you’re not sure what to write or how to start, here are some tips for writing a great heartfelt letter to Mom.

Does she love to linger and chat or give gifts that include spending lots of time together? If quality time together is how she chooses to show love, then she probably would love for you to give her the gift of your time. Here are some ideas you can try: find an item on her bucket list you can cross off together, schedule a spa day together, try out a new restaurant together, or pick out a book to read and get coffee to talk about it when you finish.

Remember when you were a kid and your mom was always thrilled when you brought her little drawings and crafts because you made them for her? Keep in mind she is still the same mom today. Whether you get a more traditional gift this year or try something new, your mom is sure to love anything with a little thought and effort behind it.

No matter your age, mothers always seem to constantly give so you become the best individual you can be.  So when that one important holiday comes around in the spring, scrounging up change to give her an all-day spa day or take her to a 7-course dinner seems like the only way to show your […]
