So, You’re Ready to Buy Your Home

by Shea Homes Northern California on July 16, 2012

You’ve finally made the decision. This decision hasn’t been easy and you didn’t make it on a whim. You know that this will be one of the biggest decisions of your life so far, but you know the time is right.

You’re ready to buy a home.

You’ve lived in a house before but it didn’t give you that warm and cozy feeling only a home can give. The journey ahead is daunting, but you know with a little guidance and research, you’ll find the perfect home for you.

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or upgrading to the home of your dreams, it helps to have a little guidance along the way. Here are some tips to help you begin the home-buying process.

Define your reasons for purchasing a home and decide on a price point.

Sit down with a pen and paper and jot down all the reasons you want to move. Downgrading? Upgrading? Just want something new? Whatever it might be, it’s good to have the answers to these questions before you begin your search. These answers will help you weed out the homes that won’t work for you, and encourage you to fall in love with the home that’s right for you. Likewise, decide on a price point and aim to stay within that range. If your “perfect” home turns out to be $400,000 over budget, it might not be that perfect for you.

Where do you begin the search process?

If you’re reading this, you’re on the internet. The World Wide Web is a great place to begin your home search. It gives you the opportunity to shop around without having to make any commitments. For example: Facebook is a great place to connect with people who live in the communities you’re considering. Ask current residents of that community what ultimately made them decide to choose that place as their home.

Don’t become discouraged.

You might visit several communities and tour many homes before finding the right one. And there is an even bigger chance that, with a decision as big as this one, you’ll find it hard to commit. Choosing your home is important, weigh all your options, and stick closely to that list you made in the beginning. The perfect home is out there, it just may take a little time to find it.

Don’t commit right away.

So you’ve found it. You walked in the door and you knew this was your home. The price is right and you just know this is the place for you. Take an evening to sleep on it. The last thing you want is to wake up the following morning having purchased a home that you aren’t so sure you’re sold on anymore. If it’s the right home for you, it’ll still be there in the morning.

Why not begin your search online today?
