10 Tips for a Successful Move

by Shea Homes Arizona on July 20, 2018

You’ve signed on the dotted line, you’ve done your final walkthrough, and everything looks great – you’re new home is ready for you! But are you ready for your new home?

Moving anywhere takes planning and preparation, and when moving into a new home there are a few extra things you’ll want to consider so you can start this new chapter of your life on a good note.
Here are ten things to consider for the big day:

Before the Move

  1. Declutter

If you’ve been in your current home for a while, then it’s likely you’ve accumulated a fair amount of clutter. Be it clothes that no longer fit, old birthday cards, or unwanted furniture, the less you need to take with you, the better.

Start in an area that has lots of stuff, like the kitchen or bedroom. Pick one corner or cabinet and ask yourself, “Is all this absolutely essential to my life?” Start a pile for the yes’s and no’s. Do you really need the extra set of pans from Aunt Shirley? Or that t-shirt from freshman year orientation? Probably not. The more you can donate before your move, the less work you’ll have, and the freer and open your new space will feel.

  1. Make a list

Maybe you’re someone who makes a list for your nightly dental hygiene routine, or maybe you’re the kind that trusts themselves to remember the thirty-two items on the grocery list. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, you’re about to embark on a journey with a lot of moving parts. You’ll want to be organized.

Think about each room in your new home and what items and furniture will be going where. A detailed list will help immensely on moving day to keep you in-control when you’re surrounded by boxes. Speaking of which, clearly labeling all your boxes before the move will keep things streamlined and efficient, and make your list all the more effective.

  1. Pack your survival kit

Moving is rarely a quick experience. After a day of hauling and unpacking, you’ll be ready to hit the hay, and the last thing you want to do is unpack every box in the house to find your sheets.

Set yourself up with a box complete with bedding, a dopp kit, and a change of clothes, so when the end of the day comes, all you have to do is relax and enjoy your first night in your new home.
